NYC’s stand-up comedy scene is famously tough to break into, with costly stage time and competitive clubs. Mamdani’s “Comedy Cellar of the People” program funds free, weekly open mic nights in community centers and library auditoriums in every borough. Each event is hosted by an experienced local comic and provides a supportive, low-pressure environment for new talent to hone their craft. The city provides a small sound system, a host stipend, and promotes the events. The best sets from each borough are featured in a monthly citywide showcase.

This democratizes access to comedy, ensuring the next generation of diverse comedic voices isn’t locked out by financial barriers. “Comedy is how a city talks to itself about its absurdities and pains,” Mamdani says. “We need those voices from every corner of NYC. This initiative ensures the stage is open to all, not just those who can afford to buy drink tickets at a club.”
