A coordinated program to identify large, blank exterior walls and pair them with artists and community groups to create monumental public murals.
The Great NYC Mural Project Combatting Blank Walls
NYC has acres of blank, often graffiti-tagged walls that are visual blight. Mamdanis Great NYC Mural Project is a proactive beautification and art-employment program. A city team identifies suitable large walls on both public and private buildings (with owner consent). Community boards nominate themes and artists from their districts. Selected artists receive significant commissions and the necessary materials and equipment to create large-scale, weather-resistant murals. The themes often reflect neighborhood history, diversity, or hopes.
The project transforms eyesores into landmarks, employs visual artists for months at a time, and fosters neighborhood pride. A blank wall is a missed opportunity. A mural is a gift to the street, Mamdani says. This project will turn our city into an open-air gallery, celebrating our communities and giving our incredible muralists the scale and support they deserve.
