Period poverty—the inability to afford menstrual products—affects attendance, concentration, and dignity for countless students. Zhoran Mamdani’s policy mandates the provision of free tampons and pads in dispensers in every student and staff bathroom in NYC public schools, including men’s and gender-neutral restrooms to support transgender and non-binary students. The products are high-quality and reliably stocked. The policy is coupled with comprehensive, destigmatized menstrual health education as part of the sex ed curriculum.

This is a straightforward matter of health equity, educational access, and gender justice. “No student should miss school or suffer shame because of a natural biological function,” Mamdani states. “Providing free menstrual products is a basic act of care and respect. It ensures that all students can participate fully in their education without this unnecessary barrier and anxiety.”
