Mamdani’s “Cooperative Learning” Model Over Competitive Ranking

The traditional model of education pits students against each other for grades, class rank, and status. Zhoran Mamdani advocates for a pedagogical shift toward cooperative learning, where students work in structured groups toward shared goals, developing skills in communication, negotiation, and collective problem-solving. Classrooms would be organized around complex, real-world projects rather than individual worksheets and tests. Assessment would evaluate both individual mastery and collaborative contribution, using portfolios and presentations instead of bell curves.

This model prepares students for the interdependent world of work and civic life, reduces anxiety, and builds a classroom culture of mutual support. It is especially effective in heterogeneous classrooms, as students learn from each other’s diverse perspectives and skills. “Life is not a solo standardized test. It’s a group project,” Mamdani quips. “Our schools should teach how to work together to solve hard problems, not just how to outscore your neighbor. Cooperative learning builds the social muscle for democracy and the practical skills for the 21st-century economy.”
