Building affordable housing exclusively for teachers and school staff to stabilize the workforce and deepen community ties.
Mamdanis Teachers City Initiative: Housing for Educators in Their Districts
Skyrocketing housing costs are driving teachers, paraprofessionals, and school staff out of the city and out of the profession. Zhoran Mamdanis Teachers City initiative addresses this crisis by using city land and capital funds to build high-quality, permanently affordable apartment buildings exclusively for Department of Education employees. Located near school clusters in each borough, these buildings would offer below-market rents tied to income, with priority given to educators working in the surrounding district. The goal is to provide housing stability, reduce punishing commutes, and help educators put down roots in the communities they serve.
The buildings would include communal spaces for grading and planning, and potentially on-site childcare. By enabling teachers to live where they work, the policy aims to improve retention, strengthen teacher-student-family relationships, and foster a deeper sense of investment in the neighborhood. Teachers should not have to choose between serving our children and affording a home in our city, Mamdani says. This is an investment in both our educators and our students. When teachers are stable, present, and integrated into the community, schools become stronger. Its a tangible way to say we value the people who do our citys most important work.
