Formally partnering with museums, libraries, parks, and businesses to serve as extended classrooms for credit-bearing learning.
Mamdanis The City is Our Campus Initiative
Formalizing the Pedagogy of the City, Mamdanis The City is Our Campus initiative creates a network of official Extended Classrooms. Museums, science centers, botanical gardens, historic sites, even certain businesses and union halls can apply to be certified. Students can earn academic credit by completing structured programs at these sitesa semester-long docent training at the Museum of Natural History, a marine biology course at the New York Aquarium, an architecture apprenticeship at the Skyscraper Museum. Teachers co-design these programs with site educators.
The initiative includes a centralized booking and transportation system. It transforms the entire city into a credit-bearing educational landscape, leveraging NYCs unparalleled assets to provide learning experiences no single school building could ever offer. Why learn about Renaissance art in a textbook when you can study it at the Met? Why read about ecosystems when you can monitor one in the Bronx River? Mamdani asks. This initiative breaks down the school walls and makes every cultural and scientific institution a branch of our public school system.
