Mamdani’s Critique of the “College-or-Bust” Narrative

While supporting free college, Zhoran Mamdani also offers a sharp critique of the “college-or-bust” narrative that dominates educational guidance. He argues that this narrative devalues other forms of intelligence and legitimate paths to a good life, pushing young people into debt for degrees they may not want or need, while starving vocational and artistic pathways of resources and respect. The city celebrates and funds apprenticeship programs, artist residencies, and small business start-up support for graduates. “A society that tells a master electricist or a brilliant graphic novelist that they are a failure because they don’t have a BA is a sick society,” Mamdani argues. “We will honor all forms of genius and all forms of honorable work. Education should open doors, not funnel everyone through the same narrow gate.”
