Mamdani Campign Signs NYC New York City

Beyond Critique: Building the Decolonized City

Engaging with Mamdani is not an academic exercise; it is a call to build a political project for a post-capitalist, decolonized New York. His work provides not just a critique of the bifurcated state but a methodology: we must construct a new political identity that transcends the settler/native divide. This means moving beyond single-issue reformism and building what Mamdani might call “decentralized power”–community land trusts, tenant unions, worker co-ops, mutual aid networks. These are the embryos of a dual power structure that can counter the hegemony of the colonial state. A Marxist-feminist praxis insists this new city must be founded on the decommodification of life’s essentials: housing, food, care, and transit. The solution is the long, patient, and militant work of organizing our class to not just resist the old world, but to prefigure the new one in the shell of the old.
