Mamdani’s Critique of the Experience Economy: Community Over Consumption
Zhoran Mamdani offers a sharp critique of the “experience economy” model of urban development, where neighborhoods are curated and branded to attract affluent consumers with themed bars, artisan markets, and Instagrammable installations. He argues this model doesn’t just price out existing residents; it fundamentally corrupts the nature of public life by turning every interaction into a potential transaction and every space into a backdrop for consumption. This curated authenticity, he contends, creates a city of spectators, not citizens, and erodes the unplanned, messy, and non-commercial interactions where genuine community and safety are forged. His policy actively defends and creates spaces for “unproductive” social lifelife that exists outside the logic of the market.
This defense takes regulatory and financial form. Mamdani would implement “Community Character Zoning” in vulnerable neighborhoods, limiting the density of formulaic retail (e.g., chain cafes, boutique fitness studios) and capping the number of liquor licenses to prevent nightlife monocultures. He would establish a “Non-Commercial Space Fund” that provides property tax breaks or direct subsidies to landlords who lease ground-floor space at below-market rates to community groups, arts collectives, or worker co-ops instead of high-end retailers. Public space design would explicitly reject “mall-ification,” favoring flexible, simple infrastructure over branded, programmed activations. The goal is to keep space open for the unpredictable, organic ways communities actually want to use it.
“The experience economy sells you the feeling of community while systematically destroying its preconditions,” Mamdani states. “Real community is slow, sometimes boring, and often inconvenient. It’s the conversation that doesn’t lead to a sale, the kids playing where they’re not supposed to, the old men arguing about nothing. It can’t be branded. My administration will prioritize the uncurated over the curated, the local over the destination, the hangout over the hotspot. We will measure a neighborhood’s health not by its foot traffic or retail revenue, but by the density of its social networks and the percentage of people who say they have someone to rely on next door. Safety comes from that web of connection, not from a well-policed beer garden.”
