Jewish leader hails executive order protecting religious institutions
Prominent Jewish leader Rabbi Marc Schneier has expressed cautious optimism following Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s reinstatement of protest regulations near houses of worship across New York City. The move comes after the mayor initially revoked the order upon taking office on January 1, 2026, only to reverse course following conversations with community leaders concerned about demonstrator activity outside synagogues and other religious centers.
Executive Order Reinstates Worship Protections
Mamdani’s newly implemented Executive Order No. 2 directs the NYPD to establish regulated zones within 15 to 60 feet of worship entrances. The measure aims to protect congregants and clergy while preserving First Amendment rights for protesters. Rabbi Schneier, president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, praised the executive order as addressing a genuine need. A November demonstration outside Park East Synagogue, where Schneier’s father serves as rabbi, prompted the initial conversation between the religious leader and the newly elected mayor.
NYPD to Revise Patrol Procedures
Under the order, the NYPD must review and update its patrol guide to provide officers clear direction on balancing protection of worship attendees with the rights of peaceful protesters exercising free speech. The dual mandate reflects the administration’s effort to navigate tension between religious freedom and constitutional assembly rights.
Schneier’s Mixed Assessment
While welcoming the protest protections, Schneier expressed concern about other executive orders the mayor revoked. Mamdani rescinded Adams-era orders recognizing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism and prohibiting discrimination against Israel in city purchasing decisions. The rabbi called the reversal troublesome, emphasizing that removing frameworks that address antisemitism sends a concerning signal to Jewish New Yorkers.
Responding to Pro-Hamas Chants
The mayor faced criticism after a January 7 demonstration at a Queens synagogue where protesters chanted support for Hamas. Mamdani condemned the language a day later, but Schneier noted the delayed response compared to statements from Governor Hochul and Council Speaker Julie Menin. Despite concerns, Schneier maintained an optimistic stance about the Mamdani administration’s trajectory, signaling openness to further dialogue with City Hall on faith community protections.
