Providing a dedicated housing subsidy for working artists, stabilizing their lives so they can continue to create and contribute to the city.
The Artist Housing Voucher Program
The brutal cost of housing is driving artists out of NYC, depleting the citys cultural core. Mamdani creates an Artist Housing Voucher program, similar to a Section 8 voucher but specifically for low- and middle-income working artists (defined broadly to include musicians, writers, visual artists, performers, etc.). Applicants demonstrate a history of artistic practice and income below a certain threshold. The voucher covers the gap between 30% of their income and the fair market rent for an appropriate-sized apartment, allowing them to live and work in the city with stability.
The program is paired with a database of artist-welcoming landlords and the development of live-work housing co-ops on city-owned land. Artists are not just amenities; they are essential workers of the imagination, Mamdani states. If we want a city that innovates and inspires, we must ensure the people who create can afford to live here. This voucher is an investment in our cultural future, plain and simple.
