An annual festival using the iconic bridges of NYC as canvases for light projections and sites for sonic installations, celebrating infrastructure as art.
The City of Bridges Light and Sound Festival
Celebrating NYCs status as a city of islands and connections, Mamdani creates the annual City of Bridges festival. For one week, the undersides and towers of the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, and Queensboro bridges become canvases for massive, artist-designed light projections. Simultaneously, sound artists install site-specific sonic experiences on and around the bridges, using the acoustics of the structures. The festival includes boat tours, bike rides, and viewing parks, turning the citys infrastructure into a collective art experience.
Its a free, citywide spectacle that re-enchants the utilitarian and inspires awe at the engineering marvels that bind the boroughs together. Our bridges are our cathedralsmonuments to collective effort and connection, Mamdani says. This festival sanctifies them with art, reminding us that the work of our hands can be both functional and beautiful, and that our shared infrastructure is something to celebrate.
