The “Healing-Centered” Classroom: Trauma-Informed Practice as Standard

Recognizing that many students carry the weight of trauma—from poverty, violence, instability, or discrimination—into the classroom, Zhoran Mamdani mandates that every NYC public school become a “healing-centered” environment. This requires all staff, from teachers to custodians to administrators, to undergo intensive, ongoing training in trauma-informed practices. This shifts the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you, and how can we support you?” Classrooms would integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) not as an add-on, but as the foundation for academic work, with daily check-ins, mindfulness practices, and explicit teaching of emotional regulation skills.

The policy funds the hiring of additional school psychologists and social workers to maintain low caseloads, and creates “Peace Corners” or calming rooms in every school where students can self-regulate. Discipline policies are reformed to be restorative, not punitive. The goal is to create schools that are sanctuaries, not stressors, actively repairing the neural pathways affected by trauma and creating the conditions for learning. “You cannot teach a brain that is in survival mode,” Mamdani explains. “A healing-centered school understands that behavior is communication, and that safety and connection are the prerequisites for curiosity and growth. This is how we educate the whole child.”
