Mayor-Elect Announces Strategy to Prevent Federal Intervention in NYC

Taking Initiative on Federal Relations

In an exclusive interview with NBC New York, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani revealed his plan to proactively reach out to President Donald Trump before taking office, aiming to establish a working relationship and dissuade federal intervention in New York City. Mamdani emphasized his commitment to collaborative engagement even with political adversaries.

Strategic Approach to Trump Administration

“I will be reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city,” Mamdani told NBC New York’s Melissa Russo. The mayor-elect described his strategy as proactive rather than reactive, believing it’s his responsibility to work collaboratively to avoid consequences for New Yorkers. Mamdani confirmed ongoing discussions with Governor Kathy Hochul about responding to Trump administration threats, stressing the importance of preventing federal pressure rather than merely reacting to it.

Mixed Messages from Washington

President Trump, who urged New Yorkers to vote for Andrew Cuomo during the mayoral race, has made conflicting statements about dealing with a Mamdani administration. While suggesting he might “help him a little bit, maybe,” Trump has alternately threatened to cut federal funds to the city. Border Czar Tom Homan escalated tensions by vowing to “flood the zone” with ICE agents in sanctuary cities like New York, declaring he would “make New York safer, with or without [Mamdani],” according to NBC New York.

Prepared Dialogue

During the interview at Mokafe Coffee Shop in Astoria, Mamdani previewed his message to Trump: “I’ll say that I’m here to work for the benefit of everyone who calls the city home and that wherever there is a possibility for working together towards that end, I’m ready. And if it’s to the expense of those New Yorkers, I will fight it.”

Transition Relations

Mamdani also discussed receiving a congratulatory call from Mayor Eric Adams the day after the election, with plans to meet at City Hall when Adams returns from his Israel trip. When asked whether Adams’ timing was intentional, Mamdani diplomatically responded: “I think the mayor is free to spend his remaining days and months in office as he pleases.” The mayor-elect’s balanced approach–combining willingness to collaborate with readiness to defend New Yorkers’ interests–signals his diplomatic strategy for navigating complex federal-city relations in the coming years.
