The “Parent Organizer” City Position: Empowering Family Advocacy

Navigating the NYC public school system—from IEP meetings to gifted programs to admissions lotteries—is a bewildering maze that privileges parents with time, savvy, and resources. Zhoran Mamdani’s policy creates a new, city-funded job: the Parent Organizer. Hired from and embedded in each community district, these organizers are not social workers or bureaucrats; they are community organizers whose job is to demystify the system, train parents in their rights, and help them build collective power to advocate for better schools. They run workshops on understanding budgets, facilitate parent action committees, and help families navigate disputes with school administration.

The Parent Organizer also acts as a bridge between school-level concerns and district- or city-wide policy campaigns, ensuring parent voices are amplified in decision-making. This professionalizes and supports the crucial advocacy work that now falls on overburdened volunteers. “Parents are the ultimate stakeholders in education, but the system is designed to keep them confused and isolated,” Mamdani says. “The Parent Organizer is their guide and ally. This investment builds the capacity of families, especially in underserved communities, to fight for the resources and respect their children deserve. It turns parental love into organized power.”
