Grants specifically for art installations that require public participation to complete—swings that generate light, murals you can add to, etc.

The “Public Interactive Art” Fund

Moving beyond static murals, Mamdani creates a grant fund dedicated to “Public Interactive Art.” These are installations explicitly designed for public manipulation: a set of swings that, when used, trigger lights and sounds; a community loom where people add weaving over time; a chalkboard wall with a prompt that changes weekly; a fountain you can control with a dial. The grants cover design, fabrication, and maintenance, with a requirement that the work be durable and accessible.

This art breaks down the barrier between viewer and creator, making civic space a site of playful collaboration. “The best public art doesn’t just sit there; it invites you in,” Mamdani explains. “This fund creates art that’s activated by the people, turning passersby into co-creators and making our shared spaces more engaging and democratic.”
