New York-New Jersey Region Prepares for Biggest Sporting Event Ever with $2 Billion Economic Impact

Global Spotlight Coming to Tri-State Area

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19, 2026, FIFA announced in February 2024. The stadium, located just 10 miles west of New York City, will be renamed “New York New Jersey Stadium” during the tournament due to FIFA’s sponsorship policies. The selection positions the region for unprecedented international attention and economic benefits.

Eight Matches Including Championship

The 82,500-capacity venue will host eight total matches throughout the tournament, which begins June 11, 2026 with an opener at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca. The 2026 World Cup represents the first edition hosted across three countries–the United States, Canada, and Mexico–and expands from 32 to 48 participating nations with 104 total matches. FIFA announced plans for an elaborate halftime show during the final modeled after the Super Bowl, marking the first such production in World Cup history, as reported by FIFA.

Massive Economic Impact Projected

FIFA World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium are projected to generate over $2 billion in economic impact for the New York-New Jersey region and support more than 14,000 jobs. The tournament expects to bring over 1 million visitors to the region, with roughly half being non-ticketholders who will experience local attractions, restaurants, and culture. Times Square will serve as a central hub for celebrations during the final weekend.

Infrastructure and Transportation Preparations

To accommodate massive crowds, the Meadowlands Rail Line shuttle train and a new $35 million busway will transport attendees from Secaucus Junction. MetLife Stadium announced plans to widen its field by removing 1,740 corner seats to meet FIFA’s recommended dimensions. Governor Phil Murphy and former Mayor Eric Adams celebrated the announcement, emphasizing the region’s world-class hosting credentials.

Preview Through Club World Cup

MetLife Stadium hosted the FIFA Club World Cup final in July 2025, providing a preview of the excitement ahead. The successful event demonstrated the venue’s capability to handle major international soccer tournaments. As Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office, the World Cup represents a significant opportunity to showcase New York’s global appeal during his early tenure.
